BUY, BEG OR STEAL : The Scream (Polydor,1978)

 

      Mnogi od današnjih popularnih umetnika ne bi postojali da nije bilo Siouxsie & The Banshees.A Siouxsie & The Banshees ne bi bili Siouxsie & The Banshees da nisu snimili 'The Scream'.1978,grupa je snimila svoj debi album koji se razlikuje od svega u dotadašnjoj rock muzici.

     'The Scream' kombinuje punk rock stav sa značajno sporijim zvukom,pri tome ne gubeći ništa od  punk agresije.Muzika je sirova,ali kontrolisana.Ključni faktor albuma je disonantna gitara McKaya,ali ne treba zanemariti ni ulogu repetativnih bas linija Severina i 'prizemnog' bubnjarskog rada Morrisa.

     Prava zvezda albuma je,naravno vokal Siouxsie Sioux.Jedinstven,oštar,tribalan...Ona urliče sa svrhom i kontrolom.Njen glas 'ledi' i zahteva pažnju.Kao i njeni tekstovi.Poseduje neverovatan dar za slikovit govor,prosto slikajući rečima jasne mentalne slike.'Carcass' i dekonstrukcija Beatles numere 'Helter Skelter' su duboke i teške.'Mirage',verovatno jedna od najpamtljivijih pesama sa albuma,je izlet u pop vode,dok 'Switch' sa svojom ukletom,ćudljivom atmosferom,prikazuje potpuno drugačiju stranu benda.

     Siouxsie & The Banshees su posle 'The Scream' imali dugačku karijeru.Prošli su kroz više faza i promenili nekoliko postava.Ali je 'The Scream' osnova za sve što će u budućnosti raditi.Da li su,ili nisu snimali bolje albume,nebitno je.'The Scream' je direktno uticao na kasnije izvodjače (PJ Harvey,Yeah Yeah Yeahs...) i izbacio je Siouxsie & The Banshees u svet rock muzike,pri tom je menjajući zauvek.

'She Brings The Rain' je verovatno najbolji momenat Malcolm Mooneya kao vokala grupe Can.Pesma poseduje nežni jazz feeling.Naravno to su Can i stvari će se ubrzo promeniti ali numera ostaje duboko ukorenjena u jazzu.Mooney je fantastičan dok peva psihodelične stihove koji najavljuju psihodelični kovitlac koji će uslediti.Prava pesma za vlažno prolećno jutro.

     Johnette Napolitano blista u ovoj pesmi.Koncept metka u ulozi Boga,Krajnjeg arbitra života i smrti,relevantan je sve dok Amerika bude suočena sa jezivim širenjem masovnih pucnjava.'God Is A Bullet' je žestok rock u kome Napolitano daje i srce i dušu pesmi svojim vokalom.'God Is A Bullet' poseduje sonični i emotivni naboj taneta,oštrinu i sposobnost da se uvuče pod kožu,razbije lobanju i ukopa se duboko u vaš cerebralni cortex.

Pop Group

 

     Mark Stewart,Gareth Sager i Bruce Smith su osnovali Pop Group u Bristolu 1977.

     Znali su se godinama pre nego što je Mark nagovorio Garetha da kupi gitaru.Bruce je već imao komplet bubnjeva i prva stvar koju su 'odsvirali' je bila 'My Generation'.

     Debi singl,'She's Beyond Good And Evil' izdali su za Radar Records,1979.Uzbudljiva mešavina disco-funk basa,rušilače punk-funk ritam gitare i uznemirujuće dub buke,uz Stewartove vapajuće stihove popzt:''Our only defence is together as an army/I'll hold you like a gun''.

     Samosvestan,drzak debi album 'Y',sledio je iste godine a potom su prešli u Rough Trade i snimili singl 'We Are All Prostitutes'.Za istu kompaniju izdaju i svoj drugi album,'For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder?'(1980).

     Pop Group se nisu mogli opredeliti samo za reggae,ili samo funk ili samo jazz,tako da su sve to smućkali u eksplozivnu smešu.

     Grupa se raspala-u sred pravnih natezanja i unutrašnjeg neslaganja-1981.

     Jedni od pionira post punka,band koji je medju prvima (ako ne i prvi) mešao politički radikalizam sa punk interpretacijom dub,funka i free jazza,svojom muzikom je uticao na brojna izvodjače,medju kojima su i Minutemen,Primal Scream,Steve Albini,Trent Raznor,Massive Attack...

     Nick Cave je posle jednog nastupa Pop Group kojem je prisustvovao,izjavio;''...it was one of those moments we just feel the cogs of your mind shift and your life is going to be irreversibly change forever''.

     Stewart je nastavio solo,Sager i Smith su osnovali Rip Rig+Panic a Simon Underwood (napustio Pop Group posle prvog albuma),Pigbag.

     2010,Stewart,Sager i Smith su reformirali Pop Group i od tada ponovo zajedno nastupaju i snimaju.

Rip Rig + Panic / Float Up CP

 

     Čak i tokom eklektičnih osamdesetih,teško je zamisliti da bi velika diskografska kuća angažovala band koji nikada nije uvežbavao svoj materijal,koji nije imao izrazitog,prepoznatljivog frontmana i koji se nazvao po albumu jazz saxofoniste Roland Kirka iz 1965.

     Pa ipak se takav slučaj dogodio 1981,kada je Virgin potpisao ugovor sa Rip Rig + Panic,post-punk grupom nastaloj u Bristolu,u kojoj su svirali:multi-instrumentalista Gareth Sager,bubnjar Bruce Smith (obojica ex-Pop Group),klavijaturista Mark Springer,basista Sean Oliver i pevačica Neneh Cherry.

     Virgin im je dozvolio da rade na svoj način i veoma brzo im je objavio nadrealno-razigrani debi LP,'God' i to u prilično neobičnom formatu 2x12".Previše radikalan za dnevno emitovanje ili značajniju prodaju,Bransonu se uloženi novac nije isplatio.

     Richard Branson i Virgin ne odustaju od banda i 1982 im izdaju novi,podjednako mahnit ali znatno strukturisaniji album,'I Am Cold'.Na krilima uspeha dva funky singla,'Storm The Reality Asylum' i 'You're My Kind Of Climate',album se probio u UK Top 40.

     Band nastupa na prvom WOMAD festivalu 1982,nakon čega ih Neneh privremeno napušta.Vratila se u Švedsku radi porodjaja a Andrea,sestra Sean Olivera,ju je zamenila.

     1983,vraćaju se u originalnom sastavu sa albumom 'Attitude',njihovim najkomercijalnijim ali,nažalost i poslednjim ostvarenjem.

     Smith,Cherry i Oliver su snimili jedan album kao Float Up CP za Rough Trade,nakon čega je Cherry nastavila solo karijeru.Sager je najpre osnovao grupu Head a potom takodje krenuo solo,kao i Springer koji je osnovao i sopstvenu etiketu 'Exit'.Sean Oliver se istakao kao session muzičar.Preminuo je 1990 u 27 godini.Bruce Smith je svirao sa Slits,New Age Steppers i PIL,a zajedno sa Sagerom,2010,obnovio je Pop Group.

     'Suspect Device' suprotstavlja nasilje,politiku i uticaj ovog konflikta na one koji su (poput članova SLF) odrastali sa tim.Fantastično izvodjenje benda sa Jake Burnsom na čelu,koji urla drske,izazivačke stihove poput besnog psa,praćen treštećim gitarama!

     Veoma žestok punk band,osnovan u San Franciscu.Najpoznatiji su po singlu '100% White Girl',za koji su bili optuženi (nepravedno) da sadrži rasistički materijal.Raspali su se 1982,ali su se ponovo,doduše na kratko,okupili 1994 da bi izdali album (planiran još 1982) i singl sa novim pesmama 1996.Pevačica Nyna Crawford je izgubila borbu sa rakom 2000.

     'Der Mussolini' je za mene,davne 1981,bila apsolutno oduševljavajuće iznenadjenje,sa svojim brutalnim ritmom i lirikom koja povezuje fašizam,religiju i ples.Fascinantna i odbojna u isto vreme,njen uticaj na brojne izvodjače i žanrove je neosporan i nemerljiv,čak i danas.

Savršeno predstavljen jezivi svet narkomana,New Yorka i smrti,uz neprekidni rock ritam,udarajući bas i vatren gitarski solo.

Lost Cherrees

 

     Lost Cherees su anarcho punk band,koji su 1979 osnovali Steve Battershill (drums),Dave Greaves (guitar) i Sian Jeffreys (vocal).Prve snimke objavljuju,zajedno sa bandom Warning,na kaseti 'The Worst Demo Ever Recorded'.1981 greaves napušta band.Novi član je Andy Rolfe,Battershill se prebacuje na bas a grupi se priključuje i bubnjar Nuts.Ova ekipa snima još jedan demo,1982,za Bluurg.

     1983 nastupaju zajedno sa Riot/Clone i za njihovu etiketu izdaju singl,'No Fighting,No War,No Trouble,No More'.Neočekivanu podršku im pruža John Peel i singl dospeva na UK Independent Single Charts.Veoma uspešan je bio i EP,'A Man's Duty,A Woman's Place'(1984).

     Bandu se priključuje klavijaturista Gail Thibert i pevačice Beverly Cook-Abbott i Debbie McKenna,a Sian najavljuje odlazak,do kog nije došlo,pa band nastavlja kao sedmorka sa tri ženska vokala.

     1984 učestvuju na više kompilacija a 1985 im izlazi debi album,'All Part Of Growing Up',za Fight Back Records.Ubrzo po izdavanju albuma,Sian ipak odlazi i to u Blyth Power.

     1986 band se razilazi.Članovi banda nastavljaju sa sopstvenim projektima sve do 2003,kada su Cook-Abbott,Rolfe i Nuts reformirali grupu.Ostali originalni članovi su se povremeno priključivali Lost Cherrees na nastupima.2006 izdali su album 'Free To Speak,But Not To Question',a 2016,ovoga puta sa Battershillom kao jedinim originalnim članom dupli album sa live i studijskim snimcima,'Who's Fucking Who?Who's Founding Who?'.

     Lost Cherrees će ostati zapamćeni po pomeranju granica punk rocka korišćenjem klavijatura,tri vokala i reggae elemenata.
